Assessing lighting comfort claims

Separate product data, a practical workstation trial and claims about health.

Eye-friendly, natural and comfortable are not interchangeable specifications. A purchasing team should identify what an offer actually claims and request evidence for the selected configuration before repeating that claim in project documents.

Identify the exact claim

Distinguish a declared lighting parameter from a user's preferred setting and from a promised health outcome. Ask the supplier to define terms such as low glare, low flicker, full spectrum or blue-light protection in the offer.

Do not treat those labels as proof that a lamp prevents a condition, treats symptoms or improves sleep. Such claims are separate from selecting a light for a desk or room.

Request relevant evidence

Ask for the report reference, issuer, tested model, configuration, operating settings and conditions. If a standard or classification is cited, confirm what was assessed and whether the report covers the offered variant.

Review scope rather than extrapolating one report to an entire range. A quoted percentage, organisation name or certificate logo without the underlying record should remain an unverified claim.

Review the workstation

Use the proposed sample with the actual furniture, screens, reading material and surrounding light. Record positions, source visibility, reflections, adjustment and user feedback. A practical trial can inform the placement and operating brief.

It does not replace testing for a measured product claim or establish a medical result. Use desk-lamp visual comfort for a workstation review and tunable white lighting for colour and control questions.

Keep the scope clear

Keep the agreed configuration, reports and sample record together. Describe only what those records support. Ask for clarification when a document is incomplete or refers to different settings.

This guide is an evidence checklist for product selection, not medical advice or a claim about the current range. Request configuration-specific documentation when preparing a workplace enquiry.
