Selecting a freestanding lamp
Choose the lighting role and physical fit before the style or model name.
Freestanding lighting includes different floor and table formats, from directed reading lights to lamps intended for surrounding room light. A general style description does not establish the arrangement, performance or current availability of a particular product.
Define the lighting role
State whether the lamp serves a reading position, a desk, a seating area or a wider room. Distinguish directed task light, shaded surrounding light and upward-facing light. Request distribution information and review the sample with the other lights in use.
A lamp selected for atmosphere may need a separate task light. Use the reading guide or room-illumination guide for those specific decisions.
Review construction
Check the base, column, head or shade, light source and power arrangements. Confirm which joints move and which parts can be serviced. Review material and finish samples rather than inferring construction from a colour name.
Compare the offered drawings and instructions with a physical sample. Keep the configuration identifiable, particularly when appearance, controls or light source options change.
Plan the placement
Measure the available floor or table area and note furniture, doors, circulation and socket locations. Check head clearance, sightlines and cable routing in the intended position. For a corner or small room, review both the lamp footprint and its relationship to seating.
Do not assume a freestanding indoor lamp is suitable outdoors. Any unusual environment needs product-specific confirmation.
Controls, care and selection
Check switch access, adjustment, restart behaviour and the care instructions for the selected materials. Record the approved settings and service contact. Decorative style and adjustable operation are separate choices.
For offices, use the workplace floor-lamp framework. Historical names do not identify a replacement product; select from the current product catalogue and confirm the offered configuration.
