Selecting lamps for reading and study

Review the lamp with the books, screens and seating it will serve.

Reading may take place at a study desk, a library table or a chair away from a desk. The useful starting point is the task and viewing position, rather than a universal claim that one lamp is best for every reader.

Describe the reading task

Identify printed books, handwriting, detailed documents and screen use. Record the surface size, seating positions and other room lighting. In a shared study space, include the needs of neighbouring users and how they will adjust the light.

Keep those requirements separate from claims about grades, concentration or eyesight. Product selection alone does not establish those outcomes.

Position and adjustment

Compare a desk-mounted light with a freestanding light beside the seat. Check mounting space, base dimensions and the offered reach or head movement. Review the sample while reading and writing to identify obstruction, shadows and cable constraints.

Ask which adjustments the selected model supports. For desk mechanisms, see the adjustable desk-lamp checklist; for seating areas, see freestanding lamp selection.

Review the light

Try the proposed settings with the actual page and screen. Check visible light sources, reflections and the relationship between the task area and surrounding room. Request brightness, colour and control information for the offered configuration.

Compare samples at the same position and record the settings. A preferred appearance is useful feedback, but it is not evidence for a health benefit or a universal numerical requirement.

Keep a sample record

Record the model, mounting arrangement, settings and room conditions used for approval. Include operation after switch-off, cleaning instructions and service arrangements. For libraries or multi-user study areas, agree a starting setting and who handles adjustments and maintenance.

Use the desk-lamp guide for a complete purchasing brief, and share the layout and intended tasks when discussing workplace products.
