Sculptural floor-lamp design and placement

Evaluate the form as furniture and the light as a separate practical requirement.

A sculptural floor lamp can be specified for its silhouette as well as its light. Keep both requirements visible in the brief so an appealing object is also checked against room dimensions, movement and everyday operation.

Form and proportion

Review the full outline from the positions where people enter, sit and move through the room. Compare head, column and base dimensions with furniture height and available space. Ask for dimensioned views instead of relying on a close-up photograph.

Note whether the lamp is intended as a focal object or a quieter part of the composition. A dramatic shape does not identify its designer, origin or originality.

Materials and finish

Request material descriptions and representative finish samples. Review texture, joins, visible fixings and colour alongside room finishes. Specify which surfaces are critical to approval and how differences between sample and delivery will be assessed.

Do not assume a metallic appearance identifies solid metal or a particular production method. Any design attribution or special material claim needs its own documentation.

Lighting role

State whether the lamp should illuminate a task, provide surrounding light or accent a nearby surface. Review the light source from seated and standing positions. Ask for output and distribution information for the exact offered assembly.

Check operation with the other room lights. Where a separate reading function is needed, use the reading-lamp checklist rather than assuming the decorative form fulfils it.

Placement and sample review

Check base clearance, furniture movement, power access and the cable route. Confirm assembly, care and service instructions before approving the sample. Record the chosen finish and configuration together.
